Love it or hate it but the implementation of the two processors – the Snapdragon 600 and the Exynos 5 Octa-Core – in the new Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone has indeed created a dilemma among potential buyers.

Amid the confusion regarding which variant of the Galaxy S4 will get the Snapdragon and which will get Exynos, a new report has hit the web Monday saying that the initial shipments of the new Samsung flagship device will mostly feature the Snapdragon 600 processor.

The news has come from SamMobile, which says that the South Korean tech giant will initially ship 10 million Galaxy S4 units. While as many as 70 percent of those units will be powered by the Snapdragon 600 processor, only 30 percent will feature the in-house Exynos 5 Octa-Core processor.

“Samsung wants to sell the snapdragon variant in America and Europe. Some European countries will receive the Exynos 5 Octa-Core variant later. Asia and Africa will directly get the Octa-Core variant,” says the report.

“According to the latest information the Snapdragon is clocked at 1.9GHz and the Exynos Octa-core is clocked at 1.8GHz.”

The report has also provided a list (given at the bottom) of who’s getting what according to their respective countries.

“The question has been raised as to whether eight cores are really necessary in a smartphone,” says a report by Redmond Pie. “It does seem an over-zealous amount of power for a device running on Android, but Samsung has never seemed shy to push the boundaries to and beyond the ridiculous.”

The report says with the fact that almost three-quarters of initial Samsung Galaxy S4 units will be powered by the quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU, “few (aside from those partial to excessive hardware) will lament the lack of support for the Exynos 5.”

“With so many devices quite readily operating on dual-core processors (Windows Phone 8 handsets, for example), one suspects it’ll be a long while before the rest of the market follows Samsung’s lead and begins exploring the benefits of the Octa-Core processor,” the report has added.

According to John Morris of ZDNet, Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa is “a technological marvel,” but inserting it into a smartphone is “a bit strange… when most PCs are getting by just fine with dual-cores (or quad-cores in high-end systems).”

Morris says that a very number of apps have been designed that need a four-core processor “let alone eight.” That said, the actual reason handset manufacturers are opting for eight-core “may simply be because they can.”
