Twitterati has a long memory when it comes to controversial tweets. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders found this out the hard way when one of her old tweets, which spoke ill of those critical of the FBI, was dug up and retweeted by social media users Sunday.

The tweet was written last November — just before the election — in light of speculation that presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was disliked within the FBI.

It also contained the link of a Nov.3, 2016 Political Wire article, where writer Taegan Goddard had pointed out why the FBI was becoming a “Trumpland.”

“Deep antipathy to Hillary Clinton exists within the FBI,” mentioned the article, adding, “Current and former FBI officials, none of whom were willing or cleared to speak on the record, have described a chaotic internal climate that resulted from outrage over director James Comey’s July decision not to recommend an indictment over Clinton’s maintenance of a private email server on which classified information transited.”

Given that her current boss, President Donald Trump, went on a Twitter rant this weekend, terming the FBI's reputation "in tatters," the sweet irony of Sander's tweet was not lost on users of the microblogging site.

People started likening the year-old tweet to the ongoing situation with Trump.

In his Twitter rant over the weekend, the president went after the FBI.

“Tainted (no, very dishonest?) FBI 'agent’s role in Clinton probe under review.' Led Clinton Email probe. @foxandfriends Clinton money going to wife of another FBI agent in charge,” Trump tweeted Sunday.

He followed this up with another tweet, where he wrote: “After years of Comey, with the phony and dishonest Clinton investigation (and more), running the FBI, its reputation is in Tatters - worst in History! But fear not, we will bring it back to greatness.”

However, the tweet that caused all hell to break loose and his political opponents to threaten Trump with obstruction of justice was posted by the president Saturday. In the tweet, Trump admitted he fired former National security Adviser Michael Flynn because he lied to the FBI and Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump, who later fired Comey, denied making such a request.

Meanwhile, people from the other side of the political aisle pointed out that it meant that Trump had asked Comey to drop his investigation on Flynn knowing his then national security adviser had lied to federal officials.

In an unexpected turn of events, Trump’s attorney John Dowd took responsibility for drafting the “sloppy” tweet that was posted by Trump.

“The mistake was I should have put the lying to the FBI in a separate line referencing his plea,” Dowd told Reuters on Sunday, elaborating on the “mistake.” “Instead, I put it together and it made all you guys go crazy. A tweet is a shorthand.”

However, the fact that Dowd had composed the tweet, was regarded with much incredulity by the Democrats.

“If John Dowd actually wrote that tweet he should be fired. That's stunning legal malpractice,” California Rep. Ted Lieu reportedly said. He added that the fact that tweet appeared on the president’s Twitter page alone makes it the POTUS’ property. “So it doesn't even absolve Donald Trump,” he said.
