Shadowhunters
Here's what fans can expect from “Shadowhunters” Season 2. Freeform

“Shadowhunters” Season 2 is set to premiere in 2017, and the first look for the upcoming installment has been released.

In the photo released via Entertainment Weekly, Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Alec (Matthew Daddario) are looking pretty close. The first season ended with the two kissing, but they did not talk about their relationship and what they will do with the complications of their romance.

The photo teases that the upcoming season will feature more of the fan-favorite pairing. Showrunner Todd Slavkin also confirmed that the series will explore their relationship.

“They’re from such two different worlds -- one’s a warlock, one’s a shadowhunter,” Slavkin said. “One is super experienced and has lived for centuries and has bedded many, many, many men and women, and here’s Alec, who is a young lad who’s just leaping into the world of relationships.”

Executive producer Michael Reisz also told Paste magazine that the difference between the two and their history will play a big role in the development of their relationship. Reisz added that the relationship will not be the only focus of their arc. He said fans are sure to see the uniqueness of both characters and that the writers will make sure that they will stay true to their natures.

“Every character, whether you’re straight, gay, bi, trans -- every character is a multifaceted human being with many different levels of what they care about, what they’re willing to risk, what they’re not willing to risk,” Reisz said. “I think a lot of times there’s potential for all of those levels to get washed over and that’s something that we fought very hard to protect in all of our characters.”

Aside from the relationship between MaLec, the upcoming season will also tackle the new dynamics between Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and Clary (Katherine McNamara). Speaking to VVV, McNamara said the tables will turn for the two.

“Shadowhunters” Season 2 will air next year, but a premiere date has yet to be announced.
