Here's what fans can expect from “Shadowhunters” Season 2. Freeform

“Shadowhunters” Season 2 is coming soon!

Freeform has just announced that the next installment of the series based on Cassandra Clare’s “The Mortal Instruments” books will return to TV in January 2017.

The announcement comes a couple of days after the first look at the second season was released. The photo featured Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Alec (Matthew Daddario). The image teases many things to look forward to regarding the fan-favorite couple.

Speaking of their fate in the series, showrunner Todd Slavkin told Entertainment Weekly that they will explore the dynamics between the two characters since they are very different from each other. “They’re from such two different worlds -- one’s a warlock, one’s a shadowhunter,” Slavkin said. “One is super experienced and has lived for centuries and has bedded many, many, many men and women, and here’s Alec, who is a young lad who’s just leaping into the world of relationships. We thought it was great in season 1, and it’s a relationship that we’re deeply invested in and has such interesting potential.”

Aside from the romance between Magnus and Alec, fans can also look forward to seeing a “new kind” of Clary (Katherine McNamara). Speaking to VVV magazine, the actress said her character will be different from who she was in the first season in terms of her outlook. McNamara said Clary has a better sense of self now.

Clary will be stronger than ever, and she will even be the person Jace (Dominic Sherwood) will bw leaning on during his time of confusion. Before the first season ended, the two were introduced to the idea that they might be siblings. Since Jace thought all his life that he was an orphan, he took the chance to be with Valentine (Alan van Sprang), his father, when he learned of their biological relationship.

“Shadowhunters” Season 2 will also feature Emeraude Toubia (Isabelle), Alberto Rosende (Simon) and Isaiah Mustafa (Luke), among many others.
