Shares of gold and silver mining companies rose Thursday along with the price of the metals in a rally that outstripped broader market indexes.

The price of gold was up 1.57 percent to $1,726.8 in afternoon trading. Shares of Barrick Gold were up 1.43 percent to $49.10, shares of Goldcorp were up 2.38 percent to $48.58 and shares of Newmont Mining were up 0.60 percent to $60.61.

Meanwhile, the price of silver was up 1.77 percent to $33.71 in afternoon trading. Shares of Silver Wheaton were up 1.36 percent to 34.97 percent, while shares of Pan American Silver were up 1.21 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.14 percent to 12,774.10 in afternoon trading, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 were down 0.27 percent to 2,810.74 and 0.31 percent to 1,321.92, respectively.
