Ambrose is going to help Cora remember in next week’s episode of “The Sinner.”

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 4 of the USA Network drama, Ambrose (Bill Pullman) helps Cora (Jessica Biel) recover her missing memories of the two months from her disappearance on the Fourth of July 2012 to the time she resurfaced at a Poughkeepsie detox center.

In the trailer for episode 4, Ambrose consults with Tammy Chin (Mia Katigbak), one of the mental health specialists who conducted Cora’s 730 exam last episode. Ambrose mentions in the promo clip that Tammy did some “memory recovery stuff” in the past, but when the detective tells her about Cora’s case, Tammy says that even if Cora remembers something from that time, those things may not necessarily be the truth.

“Sometimes real memories are recovered. Sometimes it’s just the patient’s imagination,” Tammy warns Ambrose.

While Cora struggles to remember the things that happened during those couple of months, the synopsis reveals that Ambrose’s effort to dig deeper into her past leads him to a new suspect.

In Season 1, episode 3, the authorities found out that Cora has scars in the crook of her elbows. Ambrose quickly recognized those scars as evidence of heroin addiction, but after noticing the scarred feet of a homeless junkie in a street, the detective had a feeling that Cora wasn’t really an addict.

To prove his theory, Ambrose brought a sugar packet, a spoon, a needle, a lighter and other drug paraphernalia to prison and forced Cora to show him how she shoots up heroin. Reluctant, Cora uncapped the needle but immediately lost steam. After Cora tearfully admitted that she actually doesn’t know how to shoot up heroin, Ambrose told her that real addicts would normally inject in their hands and feet before their arms would get scarred like hers.

When Ambrose asked her how much of the two months between the Fourth of July and Poughkeepsie she remembers, Cora answered, “Fragments.” While Cora may have still thought that she was an addict for years, Ambrose is now convinced that somebody apart from her was responsible for the scars on her arms.
