Christopher Abbott as Mason
Mason (Christopher Abbott) takes matters into his own hands in Season 1, episode 3 of “The Sinner.” USA Network/Peter Kramer

Mason wants to know the truth about what happened between Cora and JD in next week’s episode of “The Sinner.”

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 3 of the new USA Network series, Mason (Christopher Abbott) takes matters into his own hands, after Cora (Jessica Biel) refuses to tell him whether JD hurt her in the past.

In Season 1, episode 2, Mason visited Cora in prison and confronted her about lying to the police that Frankie (Eric Todd) — the man she stabbed to death on the beach — was the same man as JD. Apparently, Mason knows who the real JD is, so he asked his wife if JD really got her pregnant, just like what she said to the cops. Cora refused to confirm however, saying that it doesn’t matter anymore.

Convinced that something happened between Cora and JD several years ago, Mason started an investigation of his own. He went to see an old friend to ask if he remembers JD. Mason’s friend said that JD is still around and stays up in Kingston most of the time. After finding out that his friend knows a couple of guys that sometimes run with JD, Mason asked his friend if he could introduce him to JD. When his friend asked why he would like to “mess” with JD, Cora’s husband lied and said that he’d like to meet him for “work stuff.”

In the trailer for episode 3, Mason is seen violently pushing a man against a wall. Could this man be JD?

Elsewhere in the upcoming episode, detective Ambrose (Bill Pullman) discovers a startling secret about Cora that changes the course of the investigation. While the episode summary doesn’t offer any clues about this secret, the promo clip suggests it has something to do with Cora’s past.

In the trailer, Ambrose gets to meet Cora’s family. In an interview with the detective, Cora’s mother says that “there was something wrong” with Cora growing up. In what seems to be a flashback scene, Cora is seen mysteriously taking a wooden crucifix off the wall.

“The Sinner” Season 1, episode 3 airs on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 10 p.m. EDT on USA Network. Watch the trailer below:
