The SpaceX Dragon cargo capsule successfully undocked from the International Space Station and is headed back to Earth, the company said Thursday.

Dragon, which carried half a ton of food to the ISS, is headed for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off California's coast at 11:44 EDT.

The American company made history last week by becoming the first private operators to dock a craft with the orbiting station, marking a new phase in NASA's space program.
