Wimbledon organizers have increased the prize money for the winners of this year's tournament to £1.1m, which amounts to a rise of 10 per cent.

The total prize fund for this year's tournament has also been increased and by 6.4% from last year and is £14.6m.

Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams triumphed last year, as the prize money for both ATP and WTA singles champions had just exceeded £1m for the first time. Nadal had defeated Tomas Berdych, while Williams got past Vera Zvonareva.

The chairman of the All England Club, which organizes the tournament, Philip Brook said, Leading international sports events such as Wimbledon are all about the quality of the players on show. It is important that we offer prize money which suitably rewards the players both for the box-office appeal they bring to the event and for their supreme performances on court.
