Total earnings for these companies are up 0.1 percent from the same year-ago period, while total revenues are down 0.6 percent. Only 38.9 percent of these companies have reported positive revenue surprises.

Estimates for the fourth quarter have come down since the third quarter reporting season got under way, but expectations for 2013 remain elevated.
