The smartphone market is seeing a rapid growth as new devices are being released every now and then. Apart from the advanced specifications, the manufacturers are increasing the screen size of smartphones.

The average screen size of smartphones ranges from 3.5 inches to 4.5 inches. The top smartphones having large screens are: Samsung Galaxy Note, HTC Sensation XL, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, HTC Vivid, Samsung Galaxy S2, HTC Rezound, Motorola Droid RAZR, Motorola Droid Bionic, Apple iPhone 4S, and Nokia Lumia 800.

Samsung Galaxy Note

In September, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Note with a huge 5.3-inch display, which is claimed to be the world's largest smartphone screen. Samsung has made the Galaxy Note, which is a smartphone/tablet hybrid, a revolutionary product with a screen that is larger than a screen on a typical smartphone but smaller than that on a typical tablet.

Galaxy Note is adorned with a 1.4GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, Mali-400MP GPU, Exynos chipset with 1 GB RAM, and 5.3-inch Super AMOLED high-definition display that has 1280-by-800-pixel resolution with 285 ppi pixel density. The phone has a 146.9 x 83 x 9.7 mm dimension and weighs 178 grams.

Galaxy Note comes with 8-megapixel autofocus LED flash rear-facing camera with 1080p video capture and a 2-megapixel front-facing secondary camera for video chat. Additional features include 4G LTE, NFC, Adobe Flash 10.1 support, TV-out (via MHL A/V link) and have a standard Li-ion battery of 2500 mAh.

In addition, the phone runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the Samsung S Pen interface, which is said to bring a selection of applications designed specifically for the included stylus. Samsung recently confirmed the smartphone/tablet hybrid would be upgradeable to Google Inc.'s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich early next year. Ice Cream Sandwich is a combination of Gingerbread and Honeycomb in one unit.

HTC Sensation XL

HTC released its Sensation XL with Beats Audio in the UK market Oct. 6. The HTC smartphone, which has a huge 4.7-inch screen, is not expected to be offered from any of the carriers of United States, but consumers can get unlocked version of the phone and make it compatible with the AT&T network.

HTC Sensation XL, which runs on Google Inc.'s Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS, is adorned with 1.5 GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset, 4.7-inch S-LCD capacitive display, 768 MB of RAM, 16 GB of internal memory, 8-megapixel rear-facing dual-LED flash camera with 720p video capture and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls.

Sensation XL touts a 4.7-inch S-LCD Gorilla glass touch screen with qHD 800 x 480 pixels resolution at about 199 ppi pixel density. It comes with 132.5 x 70.7 x 9.9 mm dimension and weighs 162.5 grams. Sensation XL comes with a standard Li-ion 1600 mAh battery with 6.5 hours on 3G networks, up to 11.5 hours on 2G networks (GSM) and a standby time of up to 360 hours.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Google and Samsung unveiled Galaxy Nexus, the first phone running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, at an event in Hong Kong on Oct. 18. The phone is expected to arrive in the United States in December.

The Galaxy Nexus, which comes with a 135.5 x 67.94 x 8.94 mm dimension and weighs 135 grams, is also known as Samsung Google Nexus Prime, Samsung Google Galaxy Nexus I9250, Samsung Google Nexus 3, and Samsung Google Nexus 4G.

The Galaxy Nexus is equipped with a dual-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A9 CPU, TI OMAP 4460 chipset, 4.65-inch high-definition Super AMOLED display with about 316 ppi pixel density, 1GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal memory, NFC support, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with 1080p video capture, and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls. Its standard battery is Li-ion 1750 mAh.

HTC Vivid

On Nov. 6, AT&T released the long-awaited 4G LTE smartphone HTC Vivid on its network. The Vivid, running on the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread operating system, features a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and 4.5-inch qHD display with 960 by 540 pixels of resolution and about 245 ppi pixel density. It is officially known the phone would be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich after the holiday season.

The HTC Vivid is one of the first smartphones which is able to use both LTE and HSPA+ 4G speeds, and so it allows owners of the smartphone reliable connections via both in areas where applicable. The phone has a 135.5 x 67.9 x 8.9 mm dimension, and weighs 135 grams.

HTC Vivid has an 8-megapixel dual-LED flash camera with 1080p video capture and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing secondary camera for video chat. The smartphone, coming with 16GB of internal storage and expandable up to 32GB with a microSD card, has multitouch input method, accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, proximity sensor for auto turn-off, HTC Sense UI, and touch-sensitive controls.

Samsung Galaxy S2

Samsung Galaxy S2, which runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and sports Samsung's TouchWiz UI, comes with an 8-megapixel camera with flash and can record HD video in 1080p, offering the richest video content on a smartphone. The phone also has the front-facing 2-megapixel camera for video chat.

Samsung said the operating system of Galaxy S2 could be upgraded to the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich after the launch of Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

The Galaxy S2 comes in three variants, on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint, whose version is called Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch. All versions of the Galaxy S2 gets the 4G treatment. The T-Mobile Galaxy S2 version has HSDPA 42 Mbps support while the AT&T version has HSDPA 21 Mbps support. And Epic 4G Touch has Rev. A up to 3.1 Mbps.

Both the T-Mobile and Sprint versions of Galaxy S2 has 4.52-inch display screen whereas AT&T version retains 4.3-inch screen of original Galaxy S2 version sold worldwide. Samsung Epic 4G Touch on Sprint comes with a 129.5 x 68.6 x 9.6 mm dimension and weighs 129 grams while the T-Mobile version has 131 x 70 x 9 mm dimension. As the AT&T version retains 4.3-inch display, it is expected to feature 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5 mm and weighs 116 grams.

The Sprint and AT&T variant of the Galaxy S2 is powered by a dual-core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 Mali-400MP GPU Orion chipset while the T-Mobile variant is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm APQ8060 processor. Galaxy S2 boasts of 16/32 GB internal storage and via a microSD card slot it can expand up to 32 GB.

Samsung Epic Touch 4G has Li-Ion 1800 mAh battery support, which will offer more than 10 hours of talk time, while AT&T versions retain Li-Ion 1650 mAh battery found in original Galaxy S2. The T-Mobile variant of Galaxy S2 has Li-Ion 1850 mAh battery support.

HTC Rezound

The HTC Rezound which was formerly known as the HTC Vigor is one of the top best smartphones on the Verizon 4G LTE network. HTC Rezound was made available on Verizon from Nov. 14. The phone has a 129 x 65.5 x 13.7 mm dimension, and weighs 170.1 grams.

HTC Rezound, which comes with a standard Li-ion 1620 mAh battery, has special multimedia features like Beats Audio Technology that offers enhanced bass, clarity and midrange audio that one can enjoy through the included pair of Beats headphones. Rezound is also known as HTC Vigor, HTC ThunderBolt 2, HTC Droid Incredible HD, and HTC ADR6425.

The Rezound, running on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, features 1.5 GHz dual-core Scropion processor, Adreno 220 GPU, Qualcomm MSM 8660 Snapdragon chipset (MDM 9600) with 1 GB RAM and 4.3-inch S-LCD display with 1280 x 720 pixels of resolution and about 342 ppi pixel density. It is officially known the phone would be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in early 2012.

HTC Rezound has an 8-megapixel dual-LED flash camera with 1080p video capture and a 2-megapixel front-facing secondary camera for video chat. The smartphone, coming with 16GB of internal storage with additional 16GB external microSD card (expandable up to 32GB), has multi-touch input method, accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, proximity sensor for auto turn-off, gyro sensor, HTC Sense 3.5 version UI, TV-out via MHL A/V link, Adobe Flash support and digital compass.

Motorola Droid RAZR

Motorola unveiled the Droid RAZR, claimed to be the world's thinnest smartphone with a mere 7.1 mm thickness, Oct. 18. The smartphone, running on the Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS, comes with a syncing system called MotoCast, which, according to Motorola Mobility President Sanjay Jha, is the phone's most important feature.

The Droid RAZR is adorned with a 1.2 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, PowerVR SGX540 GPU, TI OMAP 4430 chipset and 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display that has qHD resolution with pixel density of about 256 ppi. It comes with 1GB RAM and 16GB ROM.

It features WebTop interfaces like the Droid Bionic, Atrix, Photon, and others. Thus, to run the full Firefox browser, the user can tie it up to one of Motorola's lapdocks.

The phone comes with 8-megapixel autofocus LED flash rear-facing camera with 1080p video capture and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing secondary camera for video chat.

The smartphone, with its 16GB of internal storage and 16GB microSD external card preinstalled (expandable up to 32GB), has a Gorilla Glass display, multi-touch input method, accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, and proximity sensor for auto turn-off. The phone has a 130.7 x 68.9 x 7.0 mm dimension, and weighs 127 grams. It has a standard Li-Ion 1780 mAh battery.

Motorola Droid Bionic

Motorola Droid Bionic hit the shelves in September, more than eight months after the device was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nev. in January. The 4G LTE, dual-chip Droid Bionic, had been delayed for months as Motorola gave it numerous changes, allowing it to compete with the high-end phones of the industry.

The Droid Bionic comes with a 4.3-inch HD screen featuring the Corning Gorilla scratch-free screen, two cameras: front-facing for video chat and 8-megapixel dual-LED flash rear camera with 1080p HD video capture, Adobe Flash preloaded, 16 GB internal storage and 16 GB external microSD card included, which can expand up to 32 GB. It has a dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, ULP GeForce GPU, Tegra 2 AP20H chipset with 1GB RAM and 2GB ROM and runs on the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread operating system. Motorola said Droid Bionic could be seeing an upgrade of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the future.

The Motorola smartphone comes with a cloud-friendly app, Zumocast, which lets users bring videos, music, pictures and documents stored on their computers to their handset via remote access. Droid Bionic has a dimension of 127.5 x 66.9 x 10.99 mm and weighs up to 158 grams (5.6 oz). The phone has standard 1735 mAh battery offering talk time of 650 minutes and standby time of 200 hours.

Apple iPhone 4S

Early October, Apple Inc. took the wraps off iPhone 4S, instead of the highly anticipated iPhone 5. Nonetheless, the Apple smartphone officially sold 4 million units during its opening weekend.

Within a week of the device's release, however, there were persistent battery-life complaints from iPhone 4S users. And some Apple customers suggested that the iOS 5 mobile operating system has also had a negative effect on power usage by other iDevices. To rectify the issue, the company recently released its iOS 5.0.1 software update.

The iOS 5.0.1 update came more than a week after Apple first acknowledged that some users were running into problems with shorter-than-anticipated battery life after upgrading to the latest version of its iOS. The software update was designed to fix bugs affecting battery life, in addition to making three other key improvements.

Despite missing prominent specifications like edge-to-edge design, a larger display, 4G LTE, and near-field communication (NFC) technology, iPhone 4S has some important features that were rumored to be part of the imaginary iPhone 5.

The features of the Apple smartphone include a 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, Apple A5 chipset, and 8-megapixel camera. It also has a 3.5-inch TFT Retina multitouch display that may give a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels at 326 ppi density, and is loaded with iOS 5. The phone comes with 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm and weighs 140 grams.

It also comes with alternating antennae for better call reception, CDMA and GSM support, a personal assistant called Siri, iCloud, Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology and fixed 16/32/64 GB internal storage. The phone has a Li-Po 1,420 mAh battery, with 8 hours of talk time on 3G networks and as many as 14 hours on 2G networks (GSM).

Nokia Lumia 800

Nokia has launched Lumia 800 smartphone in a move to regain its lost smartphone market. The phone is the fruit of Nokia's partnership with Microsoft whose Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system powers the latest smartphone.

The Nokia smartphone weighs 142 grams and has a dimension of 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1 mm. Lumia 800 features a 3.7 inch AMOLED ClearBlack display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels at about 252 pixels per inch (ppi) density.

It packs a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset, 3D Graphics HW Acce with 512 MB RAM. The features of the phone include 8MP autofocus dual-LED flash Carl Zeiss optics camera with 720 pixel resolution at 30 fps, and 16 GB internal storage.

The additional features include micro-SIM card support only, digital compass, Gorilla Glass, Nokia ClearBlack display, multi-touch input method, proximity sensor for auto turn-off, accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate, and touch-sensitive controls. The phone's standard Li-ion 1450 mAh battery gives up to 13 hours of talktime on 2G and 9.5 hours on 3G and standby time of 335 hours on 2G and 265 hours on 3G.
