UPDATE: 5:05 a.m. EST -- Twitter's main website and mobile apps are all back up and running in Europe after the service was down for over an hour however they remain offline for users in the U.S. This is the third such outage in five days. Twitter has yet to say what the reason for the outage was.

Twitter is inaccessible for users across the globe Tuesday though the cause of the problem is unknown.

Trying to access Twitter's main website sees users presented with the following message: "Something went technically wrong. Thanks for noticing—we're going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon."

According to the website Down Detector, reports of problems began at 3 a.m. EST Tuesday and reports are coming from users in Europe, U.S. and Japan.

Twitter's own status page has now been updated to reflect the current issue, with the company saying: "Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution.."
