Once the best 185-pound fighter in the world, Chris Weidman is now fighting to prove that he still belongs in the UFC. He brings his three-fight losing streak to Long Island, New York Saturday night in a bout against No.8 ranked middleweight Kelvin Gastelum.

UFC Fight Night: Weidman vs. Gastelum starts at 8 p.m. EDT on FOX, concluding with the main event between the two middleweights. Two years after he established himself as the class of the division, the betting odds indicate that Weidman is in for yet another defeat.

Ranked No.5 among 185-pounders, Weidman is the underdog in his hometown. He last fought at UFC 210 on April 8 when he suffered a second-round knockout to Gegard Mousasi in what was a controversial stoppage by the referee. Six months earlier, he was knocked out by Yoel Romero at Madison Square Garden. It was Weidman’s first fight since he lost the UFC middleweight championship exactly 11 months prior, suffering a fourth-round knockout at the hands of Luke Rockhold.

Weidman’s losses have come against the best the division has to offer, and he still believes he should be able to beat any middleweight that he comes up against.

“Every one of those fights I lost, I was winning those fights and it isn’t like those guys showed they have more potential than me or that their ability is better and I wasn’t in their league,” Weidman told Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole. “There were times in those fights where it might have looked the other way, where I was leaps and bounds above them. All of them. They got their hands raised that night. They figured out a way to win.

“They got their hands raised and I didn’t, but that doesn’t dictate my potential or where I am in the division. I feel like I’m the best in the world. I just have to go out there and be relaxed and be confident and I don’t think any one of these guys could beat me.”

Gastelum has had his own issues over the last few years. He missed weight for the third time trying to fight in the 170-pound division in November, and he moved back to the middleweight division a month later.

Despite preferring to fight as a welterweight, Gastelum has proven to be a force at 185 pounds. He scored a third-round knockout over Tim Kennedy on Dec. 10, and he knocked out Vitor Belfort three months later, though the result was eventually changed to a no-contest because Gastelum tested positive for Marijuana.

On Saturday, he’s got a chance to move further up the middleweight rankings and threaten Weidman’s UFC career.

Three fights will precede Weidman vs. Gastelum on the main fight card. Featherweight Dennis Bermudez and light heavyweight Gian Villante are favored to win their respective fights. Jimmie Rivera is the favorite in a bantamweight bout.
