The United States men's national team may be close to hitting the panic button in World Cup qualifying. After losing at home to Mexico and a road loss to Costa Rica, the Yanks sit at the bottom of the Hexagonal table when they host Honduras on Friday night at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, California.

While the U.S. has mostly enjoyed success against Honduras, the results haven't exactly been convincing. In the five previous matches against Honduras, the U.S. has three wins, one loss and one draw, and have only outscored Honduras, 8-5, in that span. Honduras is by no means a pushover and have a decent chance to reach Russia 2018 since four of the six CONCACAF countries can clinch a World Cup berth.

Bruce Arena will be at the helm of his first meaningful match since being named the head coach in November. The U.S. was at their best when Arena was in charge, reaching the quarterfinals in 2002. There remains hope that he can rekindle that magic this time around after mixed results under Jurgen Klinsmann. Arena has stated that he thinks the U.S. team "can close the gap" after a poor start and doesn't seem overly concerned that the U.S. has some catching up to do with eight games remaining in qualifying.

The U.S. will likely have a familiar forward partnership in the starting lineup. Veterans Clint Dempsey, 34, and Joze Altidore, 27, have scored a combined 89 goals and figure to see substantial minutes with Bobby Wood sidelined by a back injury and Jordan Morris battling ankle problems.

But the U.S. also has a budding star in attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic. The 18-year-old starts for Borussia Dortmund and even scored in a recent Champions League match against Benfica that advanced the German club to the quarterfinals. Arena may consider using Pulisic in more of a winger role against Honduras since he has mostly excelled at the position with Dortmund.

In defense, Geoff Cameron is expected to play a big role for the Yanks. The Massachusetts native has been a mainstay for Stoke City in the Premier League and serves as Arena's most accomplished and versatile defender, especially with wingback Fabian Johnson out with a hamstring injury.

Honduras is led by captain Maynor Figueroa. After several seasons in the Premier League, the veteran defender made the move to MLS in 2015 and currently plays for FC Dallas. With over 113 caps, Figueroa is expected to be a calming figure on a roster packed with youth.

Jorge Pinto's forwards include Anthony Lozano (23), Rubilio Castillo (25), Eddie Hernandez (26), as well as 21-year-olds Alberth Elis and Michael Chirinos. Lozano, who plays in La Liga for Tenerife, and Elis, who has performed well in his debut season with the Houston Dynamo, are expected to be the starters.

In their first qualifying match, Honduras lost at home to Panama, but followed it up with a 3-1 home win over Trinidad and Tobago.
