“Vampire Diaries” fans were devastated to learn from an insider that Ian Somerhalder was not being considered for the role of Christian Grey in the “50 Shades Of Grey” movie. And it appears like the actor himself is upset as well.

X17 Online captured the 34-year-old arriving at LAX after news broke late last week that Somerhalder was out of the running. “Fifty Shades Of Grey” author E.L. James reportedly told Comic-Con partygoers that the “Vampire Diaries” star would not land the part of the kinky entrepreneur. When a member of the paparazzi asked Somerhalder who landed the role of Christian Grey, the actor responded, “I don’t know you, you tell me.” The paparazzi followed up by asking who he thinks the part of Christian should go to, and Somerhalder sassily told them “Jim Carrey.”

Seemingly snippy outside LAX, just a few weeks ago he was open to questions about the film. “One can never get bored of people asking about a huge project,” he told Metro Online. “Everyone has to realize every guy in Hollywood is up for this role. It could be anyone – that’s how that goes.”

Ian Somerhalder was believed to be a frontrunner for the highly coveted role. E.L. James fueled theories of his casting in February when she responded to a Twitter fan page that posted a photo of a masked Somerhalder with a line from the book. “All I can see of his face is his beautiful chiseled mouth and strong jaw,” read the caption of the photo. James had responded to the photo with a smiley face.

A casting call for the role of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele is currently out, with an insider telling the International Business Times that despite big Hollywood names being thrown into the mix, the part is likely to go to a lesser known actor. The theory is that the role will catapult a relative newcomer into a feeding frenzy of fans – similar to what “Twilight” did for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

“Fifty Shades Of Grey” is set to captivate viewers when it hits theaters on Aug. 1, 2014. “Nowhere Boy’s” Sam Taylor-Johnson will be directing the flick.
