Venus William's time at the Australian Open was cut short after injury forced her to retire from her third round tie with Andrea Petkovic.

It was a recurrence of the groin injury she picked up in her second-round tie with Sandra Zahlavova, wherein she needed treatment on court before proceeding to win the tie 6-7 (6-8) 6-0 6-4.

She looked out-of-sorts on court against Petkovic, moving around gingerly. She was broken in the very first game, and could only play six points before she screamed in pain and called for a medical timeout.

Venus decided she couldn't carry on and retired from the game, meaning Andrea Petkovic progresses to the fourth-round at Venus' expense.

This is her first retirement from a grand slam game. However, the crowd at the Rod Laver arena didn't sympathize as she was booed off court.
