Auto sales in Vietnam surged 104 percent in September from a year earlier to 11,071 units after a 31 percent increase in August, an industry report said on Wednesday.

Still, cumulative sales from January to September dropped 12 percent from the same period last year to 80,374 vehicles, after an annual fall of 19 percent in the first eight months, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association said.

Sales in the passenger car category rose 15 percent during the nine-month period from a year earlier, it said.

Vietnam's economy grew an estimated 4.56 percent in the first nine months from a year earlier, slowing from an annual growth of 6.52 percent in the same period last year, government statistics show. [ID:nHAN497387]

Japan's Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) topped the list with 2,805 cars sold last month, up 25.3 percent from the same month last year. Its accumulated sales so far this year rose 24.2 percent from a year earlier to 19,446 cars. (Reporting by Ho Binh Minh. Editing by Jason Szep)
