U.S. stocks ended lower on Thursday, starting the second half of the year on a weak note, as manufacturing and labor market data heightened fears of a double-dip recession before Friday's jobs report.

Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 42.17 points, or 0.43 percent, at 9,731.85. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 3.38 points, or 0.33 percent, at 1,027.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 7.88 points, or 0.37 percent, at 2,101.36.
