A pair of New Jersey teenagers was given free food and garnered praise from Reddit users after defending a Wendy’s cashier from a bully.

Kailee Whiting and girlfriend Katie Light were about to order at a New Jersey Wendy’s restaurant over the weekend when they noticed a customer who was screaming at a cashier, Yahoo Shine reports. Rather than stand by and watch the customer bully the cashier, the Rowan University students decided to come to her defense.

Whiting and Light’s random act of kindness resulted in a rather delicious reward. As payment for their good deed, the Wendy’s cashier gave them a free meal. On Sunday, Whiting took to Reddit to recount the story, earning universal praise from fellow social media users.

“Stood up for an innocent employee at Wendy’s who was being bullied by a customer. She gave us free frosties and chicken nuggets,” Whiting wrote. She also posted a note that she received from the Wendy’s cashier, which read, “You guys are awesome. (Hope you like vanilla.)”

“I thought it was really sweet of the [Wendy’s] cashier,” Light, 18, told Yahoo Shine. “It was nice to know that she was happy that we stood up for her. Karma gave us something back.”

According to Whiting and Light, the incident took place while she and Light were standing in line at a Franklin, N.J., Wendy’s restaurant, Yahoo Shines reports. The area had just experienced a blackout, causing a delay in food service and a stressful situation for workers. At one point, an older female customer began to yell, saying, “If you weren’t ready to take my order, you shouldn’t have called me up.”

Whiting, who works part-time at a diner, attempted to explain to the bully that the cashier was working as hard as she could. This drew the ire of the irate customer, who reportedly told the teenagers to “shut up and stop talking,” Light told Yahoo Shine.

"When we got our food, the cashier smiled and said, 'Here’s your chicken nuggets.' She gave us a free 16-piece chicken nuggets even though we didn’t order any. And when we were done, she came out with a tray of two frosties just as a nice gesture ... like, 'Thank you for standing up for me,'" Light told Yahoo Shine.

Whiting and Light were later told that the disgruntled customer had called the Wendy’s manager to complain that the cashier had given out free food. However, Yahoo Shine notes that the manager didn’t care.
