Women showcase their personality with their wardrobe choices, and Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) of “House of Cards” is no exception.

Claire utilizes a wide range of outfits to her benefit and easily goes from strong blacks to soft pinks, not really depending on her mood, but rather, depending on the situation that she is in.

When she secured the presidency, Claire wore dove white while taking down terrorist Yusuf Al Ahmadi. Costume designer Kemal Harris told Variety that she wanted to look innocent all while calling the shots on the operation. “She has to look like the hero, or the angel,” said Harris. “That’s a great example of how one outfit has to move from the situation room to the public eye.”

When she met with a group of female senators in the Roosevelt Room, she wowed with a feminine pink blouse. Harris said it’s not because Claire is particularly fond of the color, but it’s to fake her personality. “Whenever Claire wears pastels, it’s to fake-show people ‘I’m really nice. You can trust me,’” said Harris. “This is a great example of Claire being a chameleon to seduce whoever’s in the room to come to her side.”

On the other hand, Claire wore a black outfit when her husband, Frank (Kevin Spacey), celebrated his win in Ohio while his opponent, Will Conway (Joel Kinnaman), conceded the presidency. “It felt like a nice little death of her moment,” said Harris of Claire’s Uniqlo blouse and Balenciaga pants. “There’s this crazy ebb and flow to her character’s path this season — she’s sworn in, then Frank takes it back — so the use of black is a nice way to close that chapter.”

One of the women who was really impressed by Claire last season was Jane Davis (Patricia Clarkson), although she turned down her offer for a cabinet position. “I think Jane views most people as simple-minded, but I think in Claire she’s found a true companion, patriot, and intellectual equal, which is rare for Jane,” Clarkson told Vulture.

“House of Cards” Season 5 premiered on Netflix on May 30. There is no word yet on its sixth season.
