Amidst the tragedy and grief wrought by shooter Stephen Paddock in Las Vegas, the heroism of Jesus Campos, a security guard at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Hotel, has come to light, with law agencies and colleagues hailing him a hero for preventing America's worst mass shooting from being even more deadly.

Campos was the first person to reach outside the sniper's 32nd floor room of the hotel, from which he was busy showering bullets from high powered weapons at concert goers at Route 91 Harvest festival Sunday. The carnage left 58 people dead and around 500 injured.

The security guard approached Paddock's room unarmed and distracted him until he contacted the police on the radio.

Identified by the International Union, Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America, Campos was injured after Paddock shot him in the leg through the door, Herald Sun reported.

Reports also stated that Campos was the one who directed the police to the 32nd floor so that they could locate the shooter.

His coworker, Liliana Rodriguez, stated that Campos was on a “random patrol” when he found the shooter. Rodriguez provided the information via a GoFundMe page that she has set up for her friend.

"Anyone of us could have been in the position he was in. Most importantly we are a home away from home and at the end of the day we are a team and we should all go home together," she wrote.

ABC News, which contacted Campos to inquire about his health, quoted him as saying, "I'm fine. I was just doing my job."

ABC News also reported how Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo lauded Campos for his aid in locating Paddock.

"His bravery was amazing. He gave our officers the key guard for the room and then continued clearing rooms until he was ordered to go seek attention," he said.

Lombardo also revealed how over 200 shots were fired in the hallway when the security guard approached Paddock. He added that it was amazing that Campos did not sustain major injuries.

After the news broke out several Twitter accounts started tagging Campos in their tweets, calling him an American hero and a brave soldier.

A Twitter user tweeted, “#JesusCampos just wanted to tell you that you are an American hero. Thank you for what you did and the lives you saved. “

While another wrote, “You know who is a brave person and a hero? #JesusCampos He knew what he was headed into, and he did it unarmed, no way to shoot back.”

President Donald Trump also praised Campos on his visit to Las Vegas in the wake of the shooting. He said, "He did a good job, didn’t he? He did a good job. Now, his option would have been trying to do it himself. But if it doesn’t work, you (the police) wouldn’t have had the information, maybe, right? He did the right thing.”

Dave Hickey, president of the union representing Mr. Campos, said: "We just want to make sure that Mr. Campos and all of our officers are recognized for what they do every day, which is protect people,” Telegraph reported.

The motive for this mass shooting is still not known but the police have maintained that it was all "obviously premeditated."
