Following John Cena’s recent engagement to Nikki Bella, fans are going wild at the idea of the couple heading down the aisle. However, many may not remember before dating the “Total Divas” star, the wrestler was married to Elizabeth Huberdeau.

Cena married Huberdeau, his high school sweetheart, in July 2009. However, after three years together, the couple’s marriage begin to fall apart and Cena filed for divorce in May 2012.

Huberdeau was reportedly caught off guard by the divorce and accused Cena of infidelity during their marriage, according to TMZ. Unsure about her husband’s behavior during their union, Huberdeau challenged the couple’s prenuptial agreement which caused even more tension between the two.

Huberdeau also took issue with Cena’s attempt to file for divorce. The wrestler’s former wife filed documents stating that Cena’s divorce petition had several errors including referring to her by her maiden name even though at the time of the divorce her last name was legally Cena.

She was also unhappy Cena did not attach the prenup he referenced, which is required when filing for divorce, and he also did not list any marital property which she believed she was entitled to and demanded he re-file.

However, by July of that same year, the two managed to come to an agreement behind closed doors. “All matters [in the divorce] have been settled and resolved amicably,” Huberdeau’s attorney Raymond Rafool stated.

Remodeling their home is rumored to be the reason behind the end of the couple’s marriage, according to TMZ. The media site obtained documents that revealed contractors filed a $100,000 lien on the house after the wrestler failed to pay him for his services.

Although plagued by infidelity rumors, by November 2012, Cena was in a relationship with Bella, however, marriage wasn’t always on the table when it came to his relationship with his fellow wrestler. Cena repeatedly expressed hesitation over marrying Bella out of fear she would want kids and he wouldn’t.

However, it’s clear the two have worked out their differences considering she agreed to his proposal at WrestleMania 33.
