USA fans were convinced that they had it locked up. Stoppage time, up 2-1 over the fearsome Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal teammates.

One beautiful Ronaldo pass and perfect Silvestre Varela header later, the score was 2-2, and the match ended moments after in a draw. It was a heartbreaking moment in American sporting history, and blocked the USA team from automatically advancing to the 2014 World Cup's knockout round.

Now the Americans are left with the prospect of potentially having to manage at least a draw against the mighty Germans on Thursday in order to get to the next round and continue their drive for the first World Cup win in United States history.

Many USA fans probably reacted by throwing their remotes in agony or going into fits of despair -- and drink -- as the realization set in that defeat had been stolen from the jaws of victory.

But one apparently very devoted fan went further, submitting an official White House petition calling on President Barack Obama to invade Portugal to avenge the result.

An IGN message board user who goes by the handle josh9308 posted the petition to the site. Anyone can post petitions on any subject: It's a free country, as we like to say. But let's hope this petitioner was merely trying to get attention, not military action.

"An American dream is to have the World Cup. The World Cup. In the country that probably cares about soccer/futbal/football/Europe's religion the least, it'd be a sweet surprise to have the cup in our sweet, sweaty palms," the petition, posted on the official White House petition portal site, states. "Portugal robbed us of this American dream. They probably have oil or at least one terrorist or something. We must rob them of their entire country. It's the American way."

So far, only the creator of the document, one B.E. of Vienna, Virginia, has signed it. Let's just hope that Team USA beats Germany. People are already calling Thursday's matchup World War III online, they don't need any encouragement.
