A suicide bomber detonated explosives in a crowded mosque during Friday prayers injuring more than 26 people in the town of Cirebon, western Java.

West Java police chief Suparni Parto was quoted by local El-Shinta radio that the attacker shouted Allaho Akbar (God is Great) before detonating the device which left him dead and many worshipers wounded. The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals and the exact death toll was still not known.

“It was a suicide attack and the perpetrator died,” confirmed National Police spokesman Anton Bahcrul Alam.

Indonesia witnessed a massive bomb attack in 2002 and the Muslim militant outfit al-Qaeda is often blamed for these deadly attacks. However, the choice of venue which was a mosque remains suspicious but most of the injured were police officers, says Reuters quoting the local TV reports.
