A teenage boy in India raped a 2-year-old girl after allegedly watching a pornographic film on a mobile phone.

The police said the 13-year-old boy sexually assaulted the child at a neighbor's house in a village in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. According to the Press Trust of India, the girl lived with her maternal grandparents at their home.

On the day of the incident, the toddler went to her neighbor's house where the teenager was also present. It remains unclear if anybody else was present in the house when the sexual assault took place, the Press Trust of India reported.

The police said Thursday the child's grandmother filed a complaint following which the boy was taken into custody. An investigation is underway into the incident.

The police did not reveal if the victim and the accused were related.

According to a report released by the National Crime Records Bureau in 2020, every fourth rape victim in India in 2018 was a minor. In almost 94% of the total rape cases, the offenders were known to the victims family members, friends, live-in partners, employers or others, the data showed.

Earlier this month, 12-year-old boy was accused of raping a 6-year-old girl in the state of Chandigarh. The boy later killed the girl by hitting her on the head with a stone, the police said at the time. The incident came to light after the semi-naked body of the girl was found in a forest area. The child went missing after going out to play with her friends, following which her mother informed the police. After a search in the nearby areas, the police found the child's body. A rock, which was allegedly used in the crime, was also found nearby.

In February, a 26-year-old man raped a 5-year-old girl in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. The accused owned a shop near the girl’s house. On the day of the incident, when the girl came to his store to buy candies, he lured her into a room promising her chocolates and raped her, the police told Times Now at the time.
