A man in Brazil was charged with abuse and manslaughter Friday after his 13-year-old daughter died while giving birth to his baby.

According to local reports, the victim, identified as Luana Ketlen, was admitted to a hospital after she complained of severe stomach pain on Dec.11. Doctors found out that the girl was seven months pregnant and immediately decided to induce labor. The girl gave birth to a baby. However, soon after delivery, the girl’s health deteriorated and tests revealed that she was suffering from multiple complications. She was rushed to a specialist care unit where she died.

During investigation, a relative of the girl told police that they became suspicious after seeing her bodily changes and soon realized that she was pregnant. When persuaded to speak the truth, the girl revealed that she was sexually assaulted several times by her father, identified as 36-year-old Tome Faba, in the last four years. The father, who was on the run, was taken into custody one week after the girl’s death. He was charged with child abuse and manslaughter Friday.

Speaking to media Monday, police chief José Barradas said, “The teenager lived with her parents in a rural area outside the city. She did not realize, until two months ago when she began to feel pains in her abdomen, that she was five months pregnant. Luana claimed she was ordered to go fishing with her father and was allegedly raped by him while there.”

He added that the father also threatened to kill the girl if she reported the incident to someone.

Meanwhile, the premature baby survived and was “doing exceptionally well”. The doctors said he was “strong and already breathing without a ventilator.”
