A 19-year-old man in India died just 48 hours after receiving the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, officials said Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Shubham Parmar. The teenager received the jab at a village in the state of Madhya Pradesh, health officials said. Authorities said that the necessary vaccine protocol had been followed after Parmar was given the first shot, The New Indian Express reported, citing Press Trust of India.

He had received the dose on Nov. 6 afternoon, and returned home after being monitored by the health team for half an hour. However, the next morning, the teenager complained of uneasiness and started vomiting. He was first taken to a local hospital and then later transferred to Sehore district hospital. The boy died at the hospital Monday morning, his family told local media.

A medical officer, identified as Dr Praveer Gupta, confirmed Parmar's health was monitored as per the post-vaccination protocol, and the cause of death will be probed. The cause of death will be ascertained once the report of the autopsy conducted by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal arrives.

Parmar's father, Maan Singh, said AIIMS doctors have told them that the autopsy report will be submitted in eight days to the police station where a complaint has been filed related to the death of the teenager, the Federal reported.

It remains unclear if the teenager had any underlying health problems before he received the shot. It also is not known which vaccine the teenager was given. India’s vaccination program currently includes three vaccines -- AstraZeneca’s Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, Bharat Biotech Covaxin and Russia's Sputnik V.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded 11,466 new COVID-19 cases, taking the active caseload to 139,683. Active coronavirus cases in India currently stand at 0.41 percent, the lowest since March 2021.

In September, a 30-year-old man died just hours after he reportedly received a COVID-19 vaccine shot. The incident took place in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. S.K. Subhani received the jab at a health center during a mega vaccination drive. The victim's family said the man suffered from fever, vomiting and diarrhea after the vaccine. Subhani’s relatives blamed the side effects of the vaccine for the death.
