The Plymouth Rock, a historic monument signifying the arrival of pilgrims around 400 years ago, was found vandalized with red paint. It took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on Monday.

Authorities said the rock was among several other monuments that were vandalized ahead of Plymouth’s quadricentennial. The Pilgrim Maiden Statue and the National Monument to the Forefathers were also targeted by the vandals.

Town Manager Melissa Arrighi and others shared photos of the town's iconic landmarks sprayed with red paint.

Lea Filson, executive director of See Plymouth, a tourism organization, issued a statement to the media and said, “Seeing this type of disrespect for the historic reminders of the Mayflower story is both sad and unsettling. The outpouring of concern and anger over the incident has been a positive ending to a thoughtless gesture.”

Police told local media outlets that a memorial granite bench and at least four of the Scallop Roll statues were also sprayed with red paint. The maintenance crew in the city was commissioned to clean the monuments.

The investigations into the case were underway. There were no arrests made in the case.
