KEY POINTS

  • Fred Warner is confident that Trey Lance is ready to be the starting quarterback of the 49ers
  • Head coach Kyle Shanahan still has the final say to herald Lance as the main play-caller
  • Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to move to a new NFL team at some point next season

Heading into the 2022-23 NFL season, there remains no clarity on who will be the official starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers.

Trey Lance has been often mentioned as the one likely to start. Given that Jimmy Garoppolo is coming off a medical procedure, it makes sense.

This is aside from the fact that the two-time Super Bowl champion has been often the subject of NFL trade rumors.

But as far as Lance is concerned, his age and level of maturity have been questioned.

It has been a point of criticism although the right people to voice out concerning this would be the people around him on the field.

Linebacker Fred Warner gave his take on Trey Lance and sounded confident that the 22-year-old play-caller is ready.

The Californian stalwart hailed Lance on how he has handled the criticism and pressure he has gotten on his status.

"He's been super professional about it, especially with how young he is; very mature for his age,” Warner told Rich Eisen on The Rich Eisen Show.

"I can continue to sit here and tell you how great of a person and player that he is. I've already spoken about that. But whatever it may be, I know that he is, for sure, if given the reins, that he's ready for it. He's very professional and mature, and ready for whatever he is given."

However, Warner added that it all still depends on 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.

"I let him handle all that kind of stuff. My job as the middle linebacker for our defense is to make sure I'm ready to go and at the top of my game for this side of the ball, and let them handle that side. I know it's a big operation to operate as a team, and so I'm just making sure I'm doing my part in the puzzle," he stated.

With uncertainty looming on what the future holds for Garoppolo, it would be fair to see Lance getting the chance to finally show his talent as the starting play-caller for the 49ers.
