When Alessia Cara first sat down at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards at Madison Square Garden on Sunday in New York City, she was just a nominee, but only a half hour after the show began, she became a winner.

The “Stay” singer received the best new artist award at the 2018 show, beating out Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels and Sza for the honor. Here are a few fun things to know about the first-time Grammy winner.

1. Though the best new artist winner, she’s not exactly new.

Though Cara is taking home this award for being a new artist, her debut album, “Know-It-All,” was actually released in 2015 and she’s been steadily sharing new music ever since.

2. She started off on YouTube.

The Canada-native shares more than just her country of origin with fellow singer Justin Bieber, as she too got her start in the music world by posting covers to YouTube, starting doing so when she was just 13 years old.

3. She has a tattoo.

The singer has sketch of a sailboat on her wrist, as a reminder that even though she’s small, she’s not week, according to an interview she had with Billboard.

4. She can impersonate other singers.

During an interview with Capital Xtra, she was asked to impersonate celebrities like Adele and she was able to do it well. She also played Wheel of Musical Impressions on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and nailed each one.

5. She uses real-life experiences for her songs.

Her debut single, “Here,” was based on a true story of a time when she went to a party when she was 16 and she had a bad time, wishing she wasn’t there the whole time.

6. She didn’t want to be a singer original.

When she first thought about what she wanted to do with her life, Cara pictured herself as a painter or visual artist, but she then decided that singing was what she wanted.
