KEY POINTS

  • Xiaomi sub-brand Poco released a new midrange-priced phone with high-end specs
  • The device is aimed at overtaking other handsets, including the new iPhone SE
  • It has top-tier specs and features for $650 or less

Poco, a sub-brand that spun out of Chinese tech giant Xiaomi this year, has released a new midrange-priced smartphone meant to take on higher-end handsets. The device, called the Poco F2 Pro, is the successor of the Pocophone F1 smartphone, and is meant to offer consumers the power of Qualcomm's most powerful mobile SoC for a low price.

The Poco F2 Pro features specs that will make people think it's a top-tier device. Interestingly, the device sells for prices starting at €499 ($540) for the base model and €599 $650), TechCrunch noted. Here's what buyers can expect to get from the device for these prices.

A Snapdragon 865

The Poco F2 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC – the same chip that powers most, if not all, high-end Android handsets today, including Samsung's top-of-the-line Galaxy S20 series. This is backed by 6GB/8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB/256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. These innards indicate that the new device is meant to go mano-a-mano with Apple's latest iPhone SE.

A quad-camera setup

The Poco F2 Pro has a quad-camera setup at the back, comprised of a 64MP Sony IMX686 as main sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide angle lens, a 5MP macro sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. This camera setup is capable of recording 8K video at 24fps, and 4K video at 60fps. The device also has a 20MP front-facing camera that pops up for those selfie moments.

A wider display

While the iPhone SE has an easy to use 4.7-inch display, it has thick bezels which means the device isn't really small. The Poco F2 Pro, on the other hand, has a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. This might be wider, but the slim bezels surrounding it means that the device isn't too big.

A huge battery

Poco equipped the device with a huge 4,700 mAh battery that can be topped-up using 30W fast charging. This is definitely bigger than the 1,821 mAh battery on the iPhone SE.

A cooling system

Poco is proud to say that the Poco F2 Pro uses LiquidCool Technology 2.0, which offers “industry-leading thermal performance.” This is great for mobile gamers.

5G Connectivity

The device offers support for 5G, which means it can take advantage of faster network connectivity wherever it is located.

Others

The Poco F2 Pro comes in four colors, and features a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio connections. It runs on Android 10, and will be available in less than a week via commerce sites such as Gearbest, Aliexpress, Amazon, Lazada and Shopee, in addition to Poco's own website.
