Fans who loved the live action movie adaptation that tells a different story of the iconic Disney character Maleficent will be happy with the latest news. Disney has included “Maleficent 2” to its confirmed list of movie projects, with Angelina Jolie returning to play the titular role.

Disney announced on Monday, April 25, that the “Salt” star is set to reprise her role of the iconic character from Disney’s classic fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty,” Us Weekly magazine reported. The actress’ participation in “Maleficent 2” has been a part of movie speculations since news of the film’s sequel surfaced in 2015. At that time, Jolie and the movie studio did not confirm nor deny casting speculations.

Apart from Jolie reprising her role in the sequel to the 2014 Disney live action movie, screenwriter Linda Woolverton will also return to write the story for “Maleficent 2,” as stated in the same report. Initial movie speculations from last year also teased of producer Joe Roth rejoining the sequel’s team. However, it is still unclear if Robert Stromberg will reprise his directorial role in the upcoming movie.

The “By the Sea” star’s decision to play her iconic Disney character may come as no surprise to some of the actress’ fans. Jolie has shared in a June 2015 interview with USA Today that she “enjoyed” playing Maleficent. She also recounted initial thoughts of wanting to do a live action movie with Disney and how “Maleficent” was the project that she wanted to participate in.

“I feel like this is the one, if I was going to ever do a Disney one, this is the one I wanted to do. And I think we’ve done it well,” Jolie stated. At that time, she was also asked of her interest in reprising her role for another installment to the movie. The actress replied that she could “possibly” consider it.

Meanwhile, Disney has yet to identify a target release date for “Maleficent 2.”
