What appears to be a copper color variant of the iPhone 8 has been leaked online. While the images strongly suggest a new color option for Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone, there’s still no guarantee that the iOS 11-running handset would debut in a copper color.

This Monday, My Drivers outed on Chinese social media site Weibo a set of photos showing non-functional models of the upcoming iPhone 8. Drawing attention to the images is the model for what seems to be copper or copper gold color variant of the Galaxy S8 rival.

It’s hard to tell if the leaked photos are those of legitimate iPhone 8 units or simply mockups of the smartphone. However, Apple Insider believes that what’s shown in the pictures could be models from a clone factory. It’s also apparent that the devices in the snaps do not have the CE Marketing for European regulatory conformity and the regulatory lines at the bottom of the back panel are shorter than the official one found in previous installments.

One photo shows three color models that are placed side-by-side. There’s a model for the copper variant, another for plain black and the last one for pure white. Though the credibility of the leaked materials is unclear, it’s hard to miss what KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said last month. According to the renowned Apple leaker, the OLED iPhone 8 will come only in a few color options. He did not reveal at the time the different color variants, but it’s possible that these could be them, as pointed out by MacRumors.

The copper variant actually resembles the rose gold option for the current iPhones. Hence, it’s possible that the mockups may be for the original gold color variant and not really for a new color option. Of course fans would have to wait a little longer until Apple officially confirms or launches the iPhone 8 to the public to get the answer if there really is a copper or copper gold color variant for the iPhone 8.

Speaking of color variants, another Apple leaker by the name of Benjamin Geskin took to Twitter last month to claim that the iPhone 8 will launch in four different colors. He did not mention the specific color options, but he did say that one of them would be have this “mirror-like” appearance. If true, then this would be a first for Apple since the company has yet to create an iPhone with such a striking case.

Rumors and leaks about new color choices for future iPhones should be carefully scrutinized however. History would tell us that not everything reported about Apple’s very successful line of smartphones turn out to be true. Last year, it was speculated that the iPhone 7 would be getting a dark blue color option, but this did not happen. The only shades available for the iPhone 7 turned out to be jet black, black, gold, silver, rose gold and the late addition to the mix, red.
