  • Ozil chances of playing this season getting dimmer
  • Arsenal leaves out Ozil, Sokratis from 2020-21 squad
  • Ozil may have to revisit past offers if he wants to play

Arsenal FC has named its 25-man squad for the 2020-21 season and notable names were missing from the list. That included Mesut Ozil and Sokratis. Of the two, the German’s omission hardly comes as a surprise as speculation grows on what lies ahead.

Hence, this also means that both players will only be able to represent Arsenal U23s until 2021 at the earliest, Sky Sports reported. This is the best to yearn for as far as Ozil is concerned. His deal will end next summer.

Ozil has not seen action for Arsenal since the coronavirus broke out. Before that forced break, the 32-year-old midfielder played in every Premier League game under Mikel Arteta. Though he has not seen action, the German continues to get paid. This includes that lofty £8 million ($10 million) bonus which was part of his deal with the Gunners.

Despite criticism of his laid-back attitude, several clubs have expressed interest in Ozil. That includes Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia and Fenerbahce of the Turkish Super League. Unfortunately, the German thumbed down those offers, preferring to stay with the Gunners until his deal runs out.

Aside from those, the options of Ozil are quite limited at this point. Almost all transfer windows have been shut down. If the German defender wants to play, only the Chinese Super League and UAE loom as plausible options. Though the transfer windows of the two leagues have been shut down, there is a chance for it to open again. This is if FIFA approves their request to reopen them by a month.

There is also the MLS and Qatar for Ozil to consider. The window for Qatar will not close until Oct. 25 while the MLS follows four days after that. Though he prefers to stay in Europe, these are the limited options that Ozil will need to consider.

Despite being kept out, Ozil’s former coach Arsene Wenger feels that the German can be an asset to any club if used the right way. He pointed out how Ozil is a proven winner and his talent is going to waste.

“Mesut Ozil is an exceptional football player. What happens at the moment between him and the club looks to be more confrontational. It's not based only on sport," Wenger said. “If Ozil cannot play in the Europa League, I'm sorry, but this guy has won things, he's a world champion, he's an exceptional football player."
