An Atlanta man was shot and killed early Friday morning after knocking on the wrong apartment door.

Omarion Banks, 19, was allegedly shot by 32-year-old Darryl Bynes, at around 12:30 a.m. when Banks tried to enter what he believed was his girlfriend's apartment. Banks' girlfriend said Banks had FaceTimed her when he tried open the apartment door, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

After Banks walked away, Bynes allegedly went onto his balcony to confront him.

"A verbal exchange ensued between the two parties and at some point, the resident produced a handgun and shot the victim," the Atlanta Police Department said in a release.

Banks had been dropped off at the wrong entryway by a Lyft as he was trying to meet his girlfriend at her new apartment.

Bynes, who was booked on a murder charge and is being held at Fulton County Jail, initially told police that he acted in self-defense.

"My son was just confused. He just went to the wrong door and he was begging for his life," Banks' mother told ABC News.

"He worked. He was getting his life together, just trying to make his mom and family proud."
