After the June 14 recall by Sprouts Farmers Market for frozen cut spinach because it may be contaminated with Listeria, Nature’s Touch Frozen Foods (West) Inc. has issued a recall of its avocado chunks because they also have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria.

The recall affects Nature’s Touch 12-ounce bags of frozen Signature Select Avocado Chunks with a best before date of Oct 11, 20 located at the back of the bag. The affected avocados also have a UPC code of 2113009412 located on the back of the bag. Labels of the recalled avocados can be viewed here.

The recalled avocado chunks were distributed at Albertsons, Safeway, Safeway Community Markets, Carrs-Safeway, Eagle, Lucky, Pak N Save, Pavilions, and Vons stores located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, Wyoming, Texas, and Utah.

Consumers that have purchased the recalled avocado chunks should discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Nature’s Touch discovered the issue when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration performed routine sampling and found a positive result for Listeria in one sample bag of avocados. The company has not received any reports of illness due to the recalled avocados.

Listeria can cause serious and fatal infections in young children, elderly adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of Listeria illness may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
