It's about time to go back to school, and that means it's time to shop. Unfortunately, it can be a lot less fun than it sounds.

Supplies like textbooks, dorm essentials, backpacks and calculators can add up quickly, leaving you little wallet wiggle room for the big purchases like laptops. Luckily, there are several back-to-school computer deals if you know where to look. Here are six retailers running promotions on laptops this month:

On Microsoft's website, students get 10 percent off. You can also save up to $300 on some Surface products or $389 if you buy a Surface and Xbox together. Put in your school's state and zipcode here and select your institution from the list to see what discounts are available.

If you get an eligible iPhone, iPad or Mac from the Apple website for school, you'll also get a free pair of Beats headphones. The fine print notes that refurbished products don't qualify for the promotion, which is also valid in stores through Sept. 5.

On Amazon, you can get up to $50 off some Chromebook products, like the Acer Chromebook R11 Convertible or HP Chromebook 14-inch. Details are here on the sale that runs through Aug. 27.

Lenovo is running daily deals on laptops, desktops and tablets on its website while also offering deals that take up to $100 off products like the Yoga 900. It's giving customers between 10-25 percent off on certain items through Wednesday, plus free shipping. Not sure what you want? Lenovo has a quiz that will help you figure out the tech you need to ace this school year.

Score a $300 32-inch TV for free if you buy a qualifying computer from Dell for school. Products in the promotion include the Inspiron 15 5000 Non-Touch and the XPS 13 Touch. Also consider joining Dell Advantage, a rewards program that will give you free second-day shipping and access to even more discounts.

Best Buy's College Student Deals email program will let you save $150 on any MacBook or iMac and $150 on some Surface items. Meanwhile, you don't even need a coupon to score an Inspiron 2-in-1 13.3-inch touch-screen laptop for $649.99 or a $34.99 Logitech keyboard. Check out other deals on the site here.
