Ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s is stepping into the $36.9 billion pet food and treats business with a new line of Doggie Desserts it is billing as "the sweetest treat they'll ever put their paws on.”

The frozen treats are specifically formulated for dogs with a sunflower butter base. Available in two flavors, the Pontch’s Mix features peanut butter and pretzel swirls while the Rosie’s Batch includes pumpkin and mini cookies.

Ben & Jerry’s said the Doggie Desserts use the same “high-quality ingredients” as its ice cream recipes. The flavors were named after two actual dogs from its Vermont offices – a Frenchie and a mixed rescue mutt.

The Doggie Desserts are sold individually in four-ounce mini cups for $2.99 or four-count multipacks for $4.99. They can be found in supermarkets, mass retailers, and select pet stores nationwide. They are already for sale on Ben & Jerry’s website.

“We know our fans love their dogs and treat them like family," said Lindsay Bumps, a Ben & Jerry's global marketing specialist and certified veterinary technician. "We created this product line so pups can enjoy something even better than belly rubs.”

Ben & Jerry’s also offer pet accessories through partner suppliers such as tie-dye leashes made from recycled water bottles and plush cone toys stuffed with recycled fill.

Ben & Jerry’s is the latest company to announce its entry to the pet industry, which, according to the American Pet Products Association, was estimated at $99 billion in 2020. That's up from $95.7 billion in 2019 and 90.5 billion in 2018.

The growing pet market captured Walmart’s attention last year as it announced it was going to begin offering pet insurance through a partnership with pet health insurance provider, PetPlan. The pet insurance offering was part of an effort by the retail giant to provide one-stop shopping for consumer pet needs under its Walmart Pet Care brand.
