An elderly mother in Canada shared the story of her unvaccinated son's death, hoping that it would convince at least one of the protesting truckers to get vaccinated.

Margaret Makins from Ontario said her 70-year-old son Dave Mitchell, a trucker who was unvaccinated, died in October after battling the virus for weeks. The grieving elderly mother who has lost all her children now urges the protesting truckers in Canada to get the vaccine for the sake of their families, CBC News reported.

"No one can force them to vaccinate and I can appreciate that, but for the sake of your families, your partners, your employers, every single person you meet, you should be vaccinated so you can help them continue to live," Makins said.

Mitchell was a person who lived by his own rules and did not get the vaccine, not because he was an anti-vaxxer, but due to his rebellious spirit, Makins said. "My son was not an anti-vaxxer, he just claimed he didn't have the time -- and if he was here, he would be sorry, wouldn't he? He knew that he should get it, but he just didn't get around to doing it," she added.

Makins has received both the doses of her vaccine and the booster dose. Her whole family is vaccinated except Mitchell and one of his sons, CNN reported.

After contracting the virus, Mitchell who was otherwise fit and healthy had to be hooked up to a ventilator for three weeks before he succumbed to death on Oct. 15, 2021. He is survived by his parents and children.

"Dying of COVID is not a pleasant experience. It's absolutely horrible," Makins said after witnessing Mitchell's desperate battle with the virus and his tragic death.

Makins now hopes that her painful story of losing her firstborn would urge the protesting truckers in Canada to understand that the vaccine mandates are to protect all families from severe illness and death.

"If my story would convince just one of them to get vaccinated, I would feel that David's dying has some value," Makins said.
