Bitcoin Is Knocking on $80K After Its Best Week in
Bitcoin Is Knocking on $80K After Its Best Week in Three Years. Friday Decides Everything. IBTimes US

Bitcoin trades near $79,000 on August 25, up roughly 24% from $64,146 just one week ago, its largest weekly gain in more than three years.

It tagged $79,463 overnight, putting the $80,000 psychological wall within striking distance.

The crypto winter narrative that dominated 2026 didn't fade. It got steamrolled in five trading days. Now the question is whether this is the launchpad or the trap, and the answer likely arrives Friday.

The $1.92 Billion ETF Stampede

The demand side finally showed up. US spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in about $1.918 billion over five sessions through August 21, their strongest weekly inflow of 2026 and the best stretch since Bitcoin's October record above $126,000. August 20 alone brought $606.3 million, the biggest single day in over three months, with BlackRock's IBIT swallowing $1.3 billion of the weekly haul.

The whiplash is the story: the prior week saw nearly $390 million in outflows, the worst in six weeks. The honest caveat still stands, though. Even after this surge, roughly $2.9 billion has drained from the funds in 2026. One monster week repairs sentiment, not the whole year.

"We saw net inflows on every trading day last week, which suggests renewed investor interest in Bitcoin." - Gracie Lin, CEO, OKX SG

Lin's follow-up was the adult in the room: after a move this strong, profit-taking wouldn't surprise anyone.

The Wall at $80K Is Real

The spark wasn't crypto news at all. The US Treasury confirmed it will double long-dated bond buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation starting September 9, easing yields and shoving capital back into risk assets. Bulls have a new buzzword for it: financial repression, the government suppressing borrowing costs while inflation eats the debt, which is the exact scenario Bitcoin was designed to hedge.

Then the squeeze did the rest. More than $4.3 billion in short positions were liquidated during the rally, forced buying that turned a bounce into a moonshot. A White House meeting with Coinbase and Robinhood leadership poured political fuel on top.

The map from here is tight. Support sits at $75,000 to $76,000, and losing it invalidates the bull-flag structure and drags price back toward $70,000. Overhead, heavy sell pressure is stacked in the $79,000 to $80,000 range, and RSI is approaching its most overbought reading in two years. Clear $79,500 decisively and the path opens toward $84,000, with $89,000 the stretch target.

"Near term, the market looks stretched but still well supported." - Jayke Kyndrede, senior sales trader, QCP Group

Worth noting who hasn't blinked: Abraxas Capital, Fasanara Capital, and Wintermute still hold over $600 million in Bitcoin and Ethereum shorts, though on-chain trackers peg them as market-maker hedges rather than directional bets.

Friday Is the Whole Ballgame

Here's the tension nobody should skip. Kevin Warsh delivers his first Jackson Hole keynote as Fed chair on Friday, with futures now pricing a September rate hike at 36%. This entire rally is a bet on liquidity, and the man who erased $2 trillion from markets at his first FOMC meeting now gets a podium in Wyoming to bless it or bury it.

So the question that decides whether $80,000 breaks or breaks hearts: is Bitcoin front-running a genuine liquidity turn, or partying into the one speech that can take the punch bowl away?
