  • Amazon says "Borat 2" made a successful premiere on its video subscription service
  • Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, praised the movie for being "relevant" and "entertaining"
  • "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” has a rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes

Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest movie, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” has made a successful premiere after Amazon revealed that “tens of millions” of people watched the film on its video steaming platform during the movie’s opening weekend.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, recently issued a statement about the film’s performance, saying that Cohen has created one of the most “well-received” movies in the recent times, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

“Sacha has masterfully created one of the most well-received films of these unprecedented times — showcasing some of the best and the worst of us, wrapped in one outrageous moment after another,” Salke said in the statement.

Salke also explained that after seeing a tremendous response for the movie, she and her company realized that their customers want to see “relevant and entertaining” content on the Prime Video platform.

“But at its core, ‘Borat 2’ is a heartwarming story of a father-daughter relationship and of female empowerment seen through a hysterical, satirical lens. With the tremendous launch of this global, tentpole movie, it’s clear our customers around the world want content that is both relevant and entertaining,” Salke said.

Meanwhile, Variety reported that a total of 1.6 million people tuned in to see the much-awaited sequel during its opening weekend. The publication cited an estimate by TV analytics provider Samba TV. If the figures were true, then “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” has surpassed the record of “Mulan” that premiered on Disney+ over the Labor Day weekend.

According to Samba TV, approximately 1.12 million viewers saw the action-drama film on Disney’s streaming service. However, an Amazon spokeswoman told Variety that the figures shown by Samba TV are incorrect.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” is the sequel to the 2006 blockbuster comedy film “Borat.” The first movie was a huge success for the “Trial of the Chicago 7” star and won him a Golden Globe. The second movie has opened to positive reviews and critics are raving about Cohen’s performance as a journalist from Kazakhstan.

On the other hand, the actress who played Cohen’s daughter in the movie, Maria Bakalova, is also getting praise for her work as Tutar.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” currently holds a score of 85% on the review site Rotten Tomatoes.
