KEY POINTS

  • Camavinga happy to stay with Rennes
  • Camavinga to continue development at Roazhon Park
  • Real Madrid could try again next year

Edouard Camavinga will stay with Stade Rennais FC for at least another year and the 17-year-old is not going to lose sleep by it. It is a known fact that Real Madrid is interested in getting the French midfielder to their side but Camavinga opted to stay at Roazhon Park for at least another year.

However, Camavina admits that he is flattered by the interest of Real on him. However, his immediate focus is to remain with the French club for the coming season. He is committed to playing for SRFC for the 2020-21 season, meaning the best that Los Blancos can do is try again next season.

"Certainly when a big club is interested, it is nice. But I am not getting carried away,” Camavinga said to Telefoot via Goal. "I took this choice with my family [to stay at Rennes]. Today we are happy to have made this decision. I just need to focus on football and not think too much about everything else around it.”

The interest in Camavinga is understandable. Last season, he made 36 appearances across all competitions with Rennes. So far, he has scored one goal and supplied one assist in three Ligue 1 games for Rennes. That performance earned the praise of midfielder Steven Nzonzi.

“Cama put in a great goal. He knows how to make the difference individually. He brings in defensively and offensively, he is complete," he said.

Only 17, Camavinga did not deny that playing above his age group aided in his performance. This allowed him to mature, clearly the answer to why his confidence is at a different level.

"I have no idea where this confidence comes from, I have often played with older players, and it surely allowed me to have a greater maturity to play with them,” Camavinga said to TF1.

As mentioned in a previous post, Camavinga is under contract until 2022 with Rennes. Also, SRFC made it clear that they have no plans of dealing away the 17-year-old player. Rennes wants Camavinga to continue his development at Roazhon Park although joining bigger clubs in the future cannot be discounted.

"It is worth pointing out that the player has the ambition and maybe the desire to go elsewhere," Rennes sporting director Florian Maurice said. "I would listen to him, but at the moment he has a Rennes contract and we will then see how the transfer window is working."
