KEY POINTS

  • Robert Lewandowski is contracted with Bayern Munich until 2023
  • He helped them win the treble in 2019-20
  • He netted 48 goals, 33 more than Muller in 2020-21 for Bayern Munich

Chelsea are reportedly seeing Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

The Champions League winners have contacted Lewandowski’s agent Pini Zahavi in the ongoing summer market, according to German publication BILD.

Quite a few Bayern Munich players have become targets of various European clubs, including Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka. If the Allianz Arena side goes on to lose these players, then stars such as Lewandowski and Manuel Neuer could lose faith in the board and might be willing to play elsewhere, the report further stated.

Lewandowski, who will turn 33 in August, has been scoring goals for fun over the last couple of seasons. In the 2020-21 campaign, he netted a total of 48 goals for Bayern Munich, across all competitions, 33 more than second-placed Thomas Muller. The 2019-20 season was even better for Lewandowski as the legendary forward had finished with 55 goals and 10 assists in 47 competitive appearances. There is a rumor suggesting that amid these links, Lewandowski finds Chelsea “interesting,” as per Germany-based media outlet Bavarian Football Works.

Chelsea are preparing to make a bid worth $69 million for Lewandowski, who is contracted with Bayern Munich until 2023, according to sports media outlet talkSport. Meanwhile, it also stated that the Bundesliga champions are not looking to offload the Polish forward and instead are working towards tying him in a new deal.

The Premier League giants Chelsea have made Haaland their main target this summer even though Dortmund are not willing to sell the talented Norwegian forward. It was previously reported that ahead of the 2021-22 campaign, Chelsea were preparing a massive offer worth $184 million for Haaland, who could be available at as low as $88 million in the 2022 summer.

It is understood that Dortmund will hear offers for Haaland only if the proposed bid will be $204 million or more. However, it won’t be surprising if Chelsea match Dortmund’s hefty demands this time as the Stamford Bridge owner Roman Abramovich sees Haaland as a generational talent who can take the team to a new level.
