KEY POINTS

  • Romelu Lukaku has signed a five-year deal with Chelsea
  • The official announcement is set to happen before the week ends
  • Antonio Rudiger calls him a "beast" for his scoring ability

The summer transfer window is set to close on August 31st, and clubs across Europe are making a mad dash to make improvements and that includes consistent English Premier League contenders Chelsea.

For much of the summer, the club has been linked to Borussia Dortmund scoring prodigy Erling Haaland but missed out on him as he opted to stay in Germany.

The Blues shifted their attention towards Inter striker Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea was able to secure Lukaku’s services after a massive transfer bid of £97.5 million ($135 million), which is expected to be announced as before the week ends.

Lukaku will be returning to the team on a five-year deal that will see him be the club’s No. 1 scoring option after he first appeared for them from 2011 to 2014.

The Belgian was loaned to West Bromwich Albion and Everton through 2012 to 2014, spending a year each with both clubs.

He made his name at Everton where he spent three years, scoring 53 goals in 110 appearances.

Chelsea’s left center-back Antonio Rudiger could not contain his excitement with Lukaku's imminent arrival as he spoke to the press ahead of their UEFA Super Cup clash against Villareal on Wednesday.

“I think you can see from his [Lukaku] body type, he is a beast,” he admitted. “He is very strong and it showed in Italy where he did very well. Also, in his national team [Belgium]. He’s a goal-scorer and top striker.”

When asked for any confirmation about when Lukaku will arrive, he said that he “knows nothing”.

Chelsea will look to defend their UEFA Champions League title this season while they improve their shot at a Premier League title after finishing at fourth place, 19 points behind league winners and Champions League runner-up Manchester City.

Lukaku will provide a scoring presence that the club has lacked last season, and it’s expected that he’ll be leading the charge thanks to his ability to find the back of the net with ease.
