  • Chelsea and Andreas Christiansen have yet to finalize an extension, despite reports in late August
  • The 25-year-old has shined since having Thomas Tuchel lead the team
  • Christiansen's affinity with Chelsea may not be enough to keep him beyond 2022's summer window

There is reason to believe that Chelsea is very much concerned about their future in the backfield after Andreas Christensen’s non-agreement to an extension thus far.

Goal’s Nizaar Kinsella revealed that the two sides have yet to come to terms as a “lack of contact” has led them to an impasse.

In late August, it was believed that the 25-year-old was close to signing a new four-year contract with the option of extending another year, but things may have soured internally.

Christensen not agreeing to a contract with the Blues could be because of the lack of money.

While no financial details were explicitly mentioned in Kinsella’s report, he noted that the always-stellar Danish defender would be earning less than both Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, who both have lesser squad roles than Christensen.

Like the Antonio Rudiger situation, Christensen simply wants to be rewarded for his part in bringing silverware to Chelsea.

Christensen has played a major role since Thomas Tuchel took the reins from Frank Lampard in January of this year.

The 25-year-old has always had an affinity for the Blues and decided to join them on a free transfer because “[T]hey play the kind of football I like [and] at the same time, they have the best plan for my future in football,” a 15-year-old Christensen said.

From 2015 to 2017, he was sent out on loan to Borussia Monchengladbach to help expedite his development, and Chelsea’s early investment in him has produced one of the best defenders in the English Premier League.

Managers Thomas Frank and Jon Dahl Thomasson have both shared praises for the quiet and soft-spoken Christensen, and they surely would not be the last as more will speak as his contract negotiations drag out.

Tuchel spoke about his gem of a defender recently, showering him with praises and seeing an even brighter future for him with Chelsea despite what he has already shown them.

The impetus is on Chelsea to get a deal done soon with Christiansen before other clubs come sniffing to poach him away next summer.
