Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has joined the Kansas City Royals’ ownership group, becoming the youngest owner in the history of professional sports.

Mahomes, 24, won the Super Bowl LIV MVP award in February, leading the Chiefs to their first title in 50 years.

“We are very proud and excited to have Patrick as our partner in the ownership group of this franchise,” Royals chairman and CEO John Sherman said in a statement. “Along with the rest of Kansas City, I have watched Patrick compete and become an extraordinary leader, both on and off the football field.”

Earlier this month, Mahomes signed the richest contract in sports history. The Chiefs inked the superstar to a 10-year extension that kicks in for the 2022 season, making his entire deal worth up to $503 million.

With an average yearly salary of $45 million, Mahomes makes $10 million per season more than Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who is the NFL’s second-highest-paid player, according to Spotrac.

“I love this city and the people of this great town,” Mahomes said in a statement. “This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”

Sherman led the group that purchased the Royals from previous owner David Glass for $1 billion last year. The addition of Mahomes improves the team’s minority representation, though NBA legend Michael Jordan is still the only Black principal owner in all the major sports with his stake in the Charlotte Hornets.

Mahomes’ father, Pat Mahomes, was a major-league pitcher from 1992-2003. The Royals last won the World Series in 2015.
