Many Americans will be off from work and school Monday in observance of Columbus Day, the holiday that marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. For the people who do have the day off, it will most likely be spent lounging and enjoying the fall weather, but some will use the weekend as an excuse to go shopping for a car.

There are other days of the year with bigger sales, such as Black Friday, but mid-October isn’t a bad time to buy a car. Those looking for moderately priced cars at this time of year should look to vehicles that will be redesigned in the next year, according to the automotive website Edmunds.com.

Dealers will be looking to sell the older models to get ready for the newer models, even though the 2015 models are in perfectly good condition. Some of these models include the 2015 BMW 3 Series, selling now at $1,500 below its market price, and the 2015 Chevrolet Volt, selling at almost $4,000 below its market price.

For long holiday weekends, experts advise to do research before buying a car. Setting a budget, reading online reviews and checking for incentives are all ways to make the shopping experience better.

Jeep is offering some of the best deals throughout the month of October, according to CarsDirect, an online automotive research portal. Jeep is offering 25 percent off the standard price of 215 Jeep Patriot Sports, amounting to about $4,500 off the vehicle, and nearly 24 percent off 2015 Jeep Compass Sports, amounting to a rebate of about $4,750. Jeep is also offering 17.2 percent off their 2015 Jeep Cherokee Latitude, or $4,500 off the $26,090 priced vehicle.

For those looking at possibly purchasing a smaller car, Dodge, Chrysler and Ford all have deals. Dodge is offering up to $4,000 off the 2015 Dodge Dart SXTs, and those looking for a 2015 Chrysler 200 Limited could see a rebate up to $5,000. Ford is offering $5,500 off in rebates for its 2015 Taurus SE.

Other deals include $4,000 rebates for 2015 Hyundai Velosters, $4,500 off 201 FIAT 500L Easys and $3,250 for 2015 FIAT 500 Pops. For buyers interest in trucks, rebates are available from Doge, Ford and Chevrolet.

Rebates of about $5,500 are offered for 2015 RAM 1500 Express 4x2 Crew Cabs, and rebates of $5,550 are being offered for 215 Ford F-150 XLT 4x2 Crew Cabs. Another deal includes a maximum rebate of $3,250 for 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4x2 Crew Cabs.
