Will Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) be able to survive in prison? “Criminal Minds” Season 12, episode 17 airs March 22 at 9 p.m. EDT on CBS. CBS

“Criminal Minds” fans are seriously worried about Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) in Season 12. The nerdy profiler was framed for the murder of a doctor in Mexico. Fortunately, he made a friend called Calvin Shaw (Harold Perrineau). But how long can he escape the adversities of prison life?

The promo of the upcoming episode, titled “In The Dark,” paints a bleak picture of Reid’s fate behind bars. It shows a couple of hardened prison mates attacking the poor man. In a terrifying scene, Gubler’s character screams for help. The CBS show’s executive producer, Erica Messer, had previously revealed that things are going to get a lot worse for the triple Ph.D. holder in jail.

The synopsis of Season 12, episode 17 (via TVGuide) states that the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) will struggle with keeping Reid safe in prison. Indeed, the preview shows FBI Agent Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) meeting Shaw and warning him that if anything happens to Reid, he will make him suffer!

Although the team is worried about Spencer, they will be busy solving another gruesome case. The BAU has to profile and catch two unsubs who they believe are operating at the same time when two victims are killed in drastically different ways in the same city.

Interestingly, the unsub seems to have two personalities – a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Rossi (Joe Mantegna) explains in the promo that the unsub, a Dr. Jekyll, turns into Mr. Hyde when the sun goes down. This unsub is also quick to kill its victims. BAU Chief Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) informs her colleagues that he will strike again at night.
