KEY POINTS

  • Bayern Munich have won 10 Bundesliga titles in a row
  • They are looking for an ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski
  • Lewandowski is heavily linked with a move to Barcelona

Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly could join Bayern Munich in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Ronaldo has another year left on his contract with Manchester United but the Portuguese forward wants to leave ahead of the 2022-23 season. Bayern Munich are set to lose their key forward Robert Lewandowski and the Bundesliga champions are planning to sign Ronaldo as a replacement, reported Diario AS.

Lewandowski has been heavily linked with a move to FC Barcelona. Bayern have reportedly rejected Barcelona's opening bid but the Catalans are expected to return with a much higher offer.

After Bayern Munich Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidzic said publicly that Lewandowski will most likely continue at Allianz Arena, the Polish striker's agent, Pini Zahavi, hit back by saying his client wants to leave the Munich-based club immediately, according to BILD.

Ronaldo, who has won five Champions League titles in his career, along with many more trophies, is used to winning titles almost every year. However, that changed when he moved from Juventus to Manchester United in the summer of 2021. While he finished the campaign with 24 goals, he did not win a single trophy.

In addition, Manchester United even failed to finish in the top four of the 2021-22 Premier League, meaning the Old Trafford side has been demoted from the Champions League to Europa League for next season.

Bayern Munich, on the other hand, have now won 10 Bundesliga titles in a row but they have been dependent on Lewandowski's goals. Out of the 97 goals scored by Bayern in the league last season, 35 came off Lewandowski's foot. The veteran Polish striker finished with 50 goals in 46 games in the 2021-22 season. He touched the 50-goal mark for the second time in three campaigns.

By signing Sadio Mane from Liverpool, Bayern have already strengthened their attack. But with Lewandowski close to leaving, Bayern will be desperate to bring in another goal-scoring machine and Ronaldo certainly fits in there.
