A 17-year-old girl from India's Uttar Pradesh state was shot to death by her father after she tried to elope with her boyfriend earlier this week.

The unnamed teen girl's father, a farmer, had caught her attempting to leave the village of Paroli in Badaun district at around 4 a.m. Monday, newspaper The Times of India reported. She had decided to run away with her boyfriend after being forced to stay indoors for over a month.

The father pulled out a pistol and fatally shot his daughter when she refused to stay. The girl's mother contacted authorities when the father was about to leave their house, and he was arrested by police, according to the report.

The man later confessed to killing his daughter and was booked under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code on his wife's complaint, police said. He was also charged with an additional offense under section 3/25 of the Arms Act for carrying a country-made pistol.

The girl, who was an out-of-school youth, reportedly spoke about wanting to marry a 21-year-old man she was in a relationship with for two years. Both lived in the same community. However, the father had turned her down and instead forced her to stay inside the house.

The girl's mother had not been against the relationship, but she failed to convince her husband to approve of it.

"The man killed his daughter to save the family's honor," Bilsi circle officer Anirudha Singh was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

A similar incident occurred in the Indian state of Rajasthan when a 19-year-old woman was strangled to death by her own father after she eloped with her lover.

Shankar Lal Saini, 50, surrendered to police and was charged with murder after he confessed to killing his daughter, Pinki, police said on March 4.

Pinki reportedly eloped with her lover, Roshan, on Feb. 21 -- a week after she married another man against her wishes. Saini had lodged a police complaint following her elopement, alleging that Pinki had been abducted.

Pinki's family members were able to trace her and brought her back home, where she was strangled to death by her father.
